What is the relation between second pregnancy and varicose veins?

Why do varicose veins have higher chances of developing during second and subsequent pregnancies?

Your chances of developing varicose veins increase with the number of pregnancies. If you have suffered from this condition in your first pregnancy, there are very high chances that you may suffer from it in your second and subsequent pregnancies too.

During your first pregnancy, there was enormous pressure on your veins. Your second pregnancy exerts enormous pressure on your already weakened veins making it more difficult for the blood to travel efficiently which results in varicose veins. For some women, the first pregnancy could have even led to bulging, enlarged varicose veins which can worsen and reappear sooner in the second pregnancy.

Using Compression Stockings in your second pregnancy

During your subsequent pregnancy, the chance of getting varicose veins is greater; and more so, if you have already had them before.

Wearing compression stockings will reduce the ankle and leg swelling during pregnancy. If you are experiencing cramps and pains in your legs and feet, wearing compression stockings can do wonders for you. If you are at high risk of developing varicose veins or have them, compression stockings can help and stop them from spreading as it makes blood easier to flow back to the heart.

How Does Compression Stockings Work?

As your stomach grows, the additional weight that your child puts on your body begins to enlarge the already weakened veins making them work less effectively.

Maternity compression stockings help circulation and blood flow to your heart by applying gradual amounts of pressure to your leg. Maximum compression occurs at your ankles as it is furthest away from the heart.

Doctors also recommend compression stockings to help with ankle and leg swelling, cramps, varicose veins and to prevent deep vein thrombosis.
